Living Without Our Senses

This week we began to wrap up our first unit of the year by inquiring into how people who don’t have one or more of their senses live their daily lives. Our focus was really on those who are visually impaired or blind, as well as those who are hearing impaired.

Ms Ida led a special lesson for Grades 1 and 2 on sign language and we all learned how to sign the letters of the alphabet, and how to say, “My name is….”

We also learnt about Louis Braille and how he helped develop the writing system for the blind. The students used the key to figure out secret messages, and wrote their own messages by sticking small gem stickers onto the Braille 6 dots grid.

In addition to that, we also spent some time discussing how important it is to keep our sense organs healthy. After the discussion, we looked at responses that other members of the school had added to survey questions by the Grade 1 class and then the students worked in small groups to create posters about keeping one of their sense organs healthy.

In PE, we had some fun playing noodle tag, Two’s Company, Three’s a Crowd, and worked cooperatively to see how many times we could hit a giant beach ball up in the air (sorry, I forgot to get photos of the giant ball! But if you were around on Wednesday afternoon, I’m sure you would have seen it!)

Finally, we ended the week with our first field trip to Bando Science Museum. Thank you so much to Mr Perry, Ms Yonetani and Ms Lim for helping out today! I’ve added a couple photos and will try to put together a video for next week’s blog.
