Fun at Nesta

This week began with a full day trip to Nesta Resort ! Although the weather wasn’t great we still had a lot of fun!

When we returned to the class, the students each researched how electric energy is produced from different materials, or how things such as batteries or electric generators work. They then shared their research with the class by presenting a diagram to the class and explained how it works.

During language class we listened to the rest of our classmates personal narrative stories and voted on them to decide who would get the various awards - Scariest story, Happiest Ending, Most Improved Handwriting, etc. Awards will be presented on Monday!

Finally, for the very last project of Grade 3, the students are working on projects that show how energy is being transformed. Some are creating Rube Goldberg Machines (Pythagoras Switch), while others are creating a vehicle that is powered by some form of energy, or are assembling electric circuits using Snap Circuit boards to demonstrate how alternate energy sources can be used to generate electricity. They will present their projects next week.

Speaking of next week, we only have two and a half days left of Grade Three!!! I’m sure that they will be very busy! Please send your child with a large bag or two to start packing up their things. We will try to start taking things home on Monday, with most of the things being sent on Tuesday, and the rest on Wednesday.

Pizza Party
On Tuesday, we will have a class farewell Pizza Party so you won’t need to prepare lunch for them on Tuesday - but they will need a lunch on Wednesday even though it is a half day, they will eat and then be dismissed at 1pm.

Student Led Conferences, Stories and Sound

Before we get into this week’s work, here’s a video from last week’s Cross Country Run.

The SLC’s were our main topic of the week and the students prepared the displays and got set up around the class and school. The Grade 3 students chose some of the work they enjoyed over the year as well as some things that they feel proud of.

Sound Energy was the one type of energy that we hadn’t experimented with yet, so we had a brief experiment to see sound as we talked! We made a small drum out of a container and some cling wrap and put on a bit a salt. As we talked we could see the salt dancing as our voices made it vibrate.

We also tested different types of materials to see which were electrical conductors and which were insulators and wouldn’t let it pass through.

During language time, we continued listening to some of of the personal narrative books, and he students created award certificates to present to each other next week. Which also happens to be the last full week of school for this year already!
