Dancing Angles and Symmetrical Story Mountains

These were our topics for this week as we wrapped up our third unit of inquiry on relationships. In math, we completed our short unit on angles and then moved on to symmetry and will continue with it and patterns next week. Students discovered acute, right and obtuse angles around the classroom, and created some angles with their bodies.

They also learnt about vertical and horizontal lines of symmetry and used mirrors to help them to see if shapes were symmetrical or not. They also created their own symmetrical patterns with geometric shapes.

In language, we have been learning about story elements. Having focused on setting and characters in the past this week we looked into using speech marks for dialogue, as well as the concept of a story mountain to represent the steps and action in the plot.

The students have been working on developing their own creative stories built around a character with a problem!

During unit time, the students have been adding work from this unit to their Seesaw portfolios. They have also been using their social and communication skills to communicate with others as they had to research and learn and create a dance to demonstrate non-verbal expression. They worked really hard with their group mates and then performed for the class, and some took action and put on a mini-concert performance for the preschool and grade one students at recess today. Please check out their videos on Seesaw!

It was great to see them working so hard and even better hearing them give positive feedback to each other after their performances. I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do in our next unit that promises to literally be “Out of this world!” - More on that next week!
