Two Days in Grade Two

We had a nice start to second grade over the first two days. The students were happy to see old friends and to make new ones too! We welcomed Rei and Isaac from Preschool and a new student, Jacy.

To help us get to know each other better and to practice asking and answering questions in English, we played “Find a Friend Bingo!” Students took their bingo sheets around and asked each other questions such as, “Do you have a pet dog?” Or, “Can you roller skate?”

We also did a bit of writing as the students wrote about what they did during their summer holidays.

This morning we did a short reading comprehension activity that required the students to read a short story and then answer questions on what they had read. We also had a small scavenger hunt in the classroom to help the students familiarize themselves with where to find different things in the classroom as well as the weekly schedule.

Speaking of the schedule, I will include it here on the blog and will attach a copy to an email so that you can familiarize yourself with it. Please pay attention to the PE lesson days so that your child is wearing appropriate shoes and clothing for physical activities. At the moment, Grade 2 will have PE on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. As I will be teaching PE myself, I have a bit of freedom to reschedule it, and will do so when the weather doesn’t cooperate - such as on rainy days. Grade 2 will also have swimming on Mondays from January 16th until April 3rd.

As the students slowly readjust to being back at school we have been discussing our classroom rules or as we prefer to call them our Essential Agreements and learning new classroom routines. Today, the students collaborated with each other to come up with suggestions for our Essential Agreements. After working together in their small groups to create a list of at least 5 rules, the groups presented their lists to the rest of the class and then we looked for patterns and similarities and then chose those that we could all agree on.

Next week we will begin our first unit of the year under the trans-disciplinary theme, Who We Are. Please check the blog each Friday evening to see what has been happening in Grade 2 and for any news about upcoming events such as this:

Parent Night - Friday, September 2nd

Next Friday, from 18:00 will be Parent Night here at DSKI. This is a chance for you to come into school to meet me and to see the classroom firsthand. I will explain about our units of inquiry as well as other details about the class. Should you not be able to attend, I will be sharing the parent night booklets with you next week and it will contain the relevant content.

I look forward to seeing you all in person next Friday night.
