Presenting Past Extinctions

This week Grade 2 continued cooperating on collaborative projects about past extinctions. Using the information that they gathered from last week's reading comprehension work they researched about some of the unknown creatures that disappeared long ago and used their artistic talents to create diagrams displaying how some of them went extinct.

Students also had the opportunity to learn from their classmates about some of the recent extinctions by watching their videos, slideshows or printed books.

In math, we learnt how to measure capacity of liquid in containers and practiced calculations which required converting litres to millilitres. We also did some experiments to see the connection between ml and cc (cubic centimetres).

On Monday, we enjoyed a special basketball clinic with some members of the Hyogo Storks basketball team! Grade 2 was happy to show off their skills! It was a lot of fun!

Finally, in PE we continued practicing for next week’s Sports Day! Please see below for more details about Sports Day, Sleepover and the Spring Musical.

If you were successfully able to sign up using the link in the school blog, then we can confirm that you do have the seats you have requested. Rather than giving out individual tickets, we will be checking a list at the door for each performance to confirm that everyone is attending. In place of charging for tickets, we ask that you make a donation at the door that the children will give to a charity of their choice.

Should you have any questions at all about the musical, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Azusa, Ms Schelin, Mr Sam or Mrs Harris.

Measuring Mass Extinctions

This week we continued our math unit on measuring but moved on from perimeter and area to mass and capacity. The students used scales to help them weigh and solve problems with mass, learning the difference and relationships between grams and kilograms. We also started learning about capacity and measuring with litres and millilitres!

During unit time, the students finished working on their books and videos about animals which have recently gone extinct before digging into past mass extinctions, such as the one that resulted in the end of the dinosaurs.

During PE, the students were real risk-takers as they practiced track and field events such as the standing long jump, skipping, javelin throw, ball throw, hurdles, sprints and 750m run.

Please remember to come cheer for them at Sports Day on Friday, April 19th.
